Andile Dylavane, Idladla (Silo), Black Clay and Wenge Sculpture

About the Item

Idladla (Silo) is a monumental, mixed-media sculpture by international renowned ceramicist Andile Dyalvane measuring 1,44 metres tall. The lower half is a geometric base sculpted from black clay while the upper section is carved from wenge timber. A completely unique work, Idladla (Silo) was made in 2016 for Camagu, Dyalvane’s first solo exhibition at leading New York design gallery Friedman Benda. His ability to work on this oversized scale and his use of both wood and clay results in an exceptional complexity seldom witnessed in ceramics globally. The work is an homage to the central role that maize (corn) plays in traditional Xhosa culture, where the presence of a grain silo helps to define what constitutes ‘home’. Its surface designs reference the African scarification with which his work has become synonymous. Born in 1978 in the small village of Ngobozana, near Qobo-Qobo in the rural Eastern Cape province of South Africa, Andile Dyalvane grew up farming and looking after his father’s cattle herd – sewing a deep connection to the land and his Xhosa culture that resonates powerfully through his work today. He has presented his ceramics in exhibitions at galleries, fairs and museums all-over the world, including Making Africa: A Continent of Contemporary Design at the Vitra Design Museum (2014), Graphic Africa at Habitat’s Platform Gallery (2013), Design Miami, Design Miami/ Basel, The Salon Art + Design, NY Now and the AKAA Art Fair. He is represented in New York by Friedman Benda, whose 2016 solo exhibition of his work, Camagu, was met with critical acclaim.
