About the Item
This Unique Hand Built Ceramic Sculpture is part of a series of works referencing the spine ("Rachis" in Latin). It is fired twice, the second time with a special platinum/metallic glaze that variously looks antiqued or speckled, or bright black. The spine is made first to get an idea of how it will lay or stand. Each part is made separately, then attached to the spine. Because of the touch of the hand and the unique occurrences in each firing, this piece will always be unique, one of a kind. Especially wonderful is that it can lie on its side or stand up, allowing for the owner to create a different look depending on where it is placed.

Helena Starcevic Ceramics produces work that straddles the line between fine and decorative art. Each piece is one of a kind, hand-built entirely by the artist in her New York studio. Taking inspiration from the natural world, Ms. Starcevic's work includes references to the stark beauty of the desert, prehistoric cave paintings, and the human form (within and without). Everything is filtered through Ms. Starcevic’s own singular aesthetic, at once quiet yet strong, meditative, and beautiful. Pieces are made in different clays and finishes, and at different scales. Groupings are available. Helena Starcevic’s ceramic pieces are held in private collections across the US and Europe. She has held numerous residencies including one at the Museum of Art and Design in New York City.
