Ceramic Sculpture, Reclining Skeletal Spine in Mottled White and Brown
About the Item
"Reclining Rachis", in a Mottled White Glaze, is part of an ongoing series investigating the spine. It is hand formed and fired twice, using a dark stoneware clay body with a satin surface white glaze. The interaction between the glaze and the clay reveals the iron deposits in the clay showing through the surface. During the application process, the glaze is rubbed away in places to reveal the dark brown clay beneath. Since it is hand-formed, it is a completely unique piece, no two will ever be exactly alike. In fact, this piece looks very plant-like as well.
The construction of a Reclining Rachis is particularly challenging and time consuming. The spines or petals are individually made by pinching out pieces of clay. They are then attached one at a time to the spine itself creating the movement in the curve. The process takes time and patience, as each piece must be dry enough to support the others, but moist enough to manipulate as desired. It it extremely fragile until the very last firing and each successfully completed piece is a true celebration! A piece like can be appreciated for the intense labor and technical skills required for its construction, as well as the beauty of its expression. It deserves a place of honor in the home or office.

Helena Starcevic Ceramics
Helena Starcevic Ceramics produces work that straddles the line between fine and decorative art. Each piece is one of a kind, hand-built entirely by the artist in her New York studio. Taking inspiration from the natural world, Ms. Starcevic's work includes references to the stark beauty of the desert, prehistoric cave paintings, and the human form (within and without). Everything is filtered through Ms. Starcevic’s own singular aesthetic, at once quiet yet strong, meditative, and beautiful. Pieces are made in different clays and finishes, and at different scales. Groupings are available. Helena Starcevic’s ceramic pieces are held in private collections across the US and Europe. She has held numerous residencies including one at the Museum of Art and Design in New York City.
