Sleek, machined and polished "Aluminum Mirror", a semi-functional and highly-conceptual minimalistic tabletop object by New York City-based industrial design studio Visibility Office. Perfectly suited for placement atop a desk or vanity, to add visual interest on a bookshelf or used as a paperweight on an entry table. The shiny top surface functions as a mirror, and bounces a rectangular reflection onto the walls under incident light, while the sides of the piece are in a matte, brushed finish. This work was originally commissioned in a limited edition of 5 for a 2018 exhibition held at the Sunset Tower Hotel in West Hollywood entitled 'Hall of Mirrors'. The concept of the commission is that Instagram is functioning in many of the same ways the Hall of Mirrors of Versailles once did. This piece forces the viewer to encounter their own reflection in a mirror in the shape and size (though much heavier) of an iPhone. The Designer's Statement on the work: "Sometimes our memories are shaped more by the frame than the content. Screens have become the ubiquitous picture frame of the 21st century and, since the advent of the smartphone, technology has worked in an act of negation; making the casing or hardware disappear in favor of the content. It appears though, that through this act the ubiquitous form of the phone has become more memorable than anything it delivers. Even more, the smartphone as a device has become a vehicle to reflect ourselves and our lifestyles in a reciprocal act of narcissism." "The form of these devices echo ones we've seen in the gardens of Kyoto temples, dating as far back as the 14th century; begging us to question why humans are so prone to rounding an edge. Perhaps the sculptural process of crafting sharp edges into perfect radii is indicative of a historical need to exercise control over nature." "These tabletop mirrors work with the iconic and monolithic form of the smart phone. The sculpted form extrudes and sweeps to greet the onlooker. Only the face is polished to a mirror finish while the rest is a raw material; as if cut from stone.
