Contemporary Korean Ceramic, "Large Stack Sculpture I" by Soo Joo

About the Item

Stack Vessel II by Soo Joo is a stack sculpture made in Korean Ceramic. It is a timeless form that can be enjoyed for decades. The sculptures fit into any interior because of their natural material and distilled form, and elevate any space. Soo Joo uses natural materials that have a long history with mankind in her work, which makes them visually comfortable and soothing. The artist creatively reimagines the essence of traditional Korean aesthetic into a modern and minimal context in this series. Stack Vessel series is reminiscent of a stack of perfectly balanced river stones, reimagined in an ideal ratio and formal harmony. It uses traditional Korean ceramic clay body and celadon glaze. The neutral color palette enhances its proximity to the natural world and provides a timeless aesthetic that is easy on the eyes. All vessels are individually created in exact proportions, then stacked on a metal and wooden base. These round forms are extremely technically challenging to create; round forms with no flat base to support the form upright are rare to find in ceramics because of gravitational sagging in the kiln. This sculpture series shows off the artist’s technical innovation and pushing the boundaries of ceramic craft. The wooden and metal base is designed to visually compliment each ceramic stack while providing structural support and significant weight to keep it upright and stable.
