Contemporary Korean Ceramic, "Stack Sculpture 2.0" by Soo Joo

About the Item

Stack Sculpture Pair by Soo Joo is a stack sculpture made in Korean Ceramic. It is a timeless form, reminiscent of a pair of perfectly balanced river stones. The stack sculpture series is created with traditional Korean aesthetics in mind, using traditional Korean ceramic clay body and celadon glaze. The neutral color palette enhances its proximity to the natural world and provides a timeless aesthetic that will not go out of style for decades. All vessels are individually hand-trimmed on the wheel to exact proportions, then stacked on a metal and wooden base. These round forms are extremely technically challenging to create; round forms with no flat base to support the form upright are rare to find in ceramics because of gravitational sagging in the kiln. This sculpture series shows off the artist’s technical innovation and pushing the boundaries of ceramic craft. The wooden and metal base is designed to visually compliment each ceramic stack while providing structural support and significant weight to keep it upright and stable.
