Curve Line Ceramic Vessel, Heeeun Jun

About the Item

Curve Line Vessel, 2024 (Ceramic, C. 16.1 in. h x 9.8 in. diam., Object No.: 4243) Heeeun Jun was born in Korea in 1998, and lives and works out of Goheung. She studies at Seoul Women’s University, and is currently a resident for the Goheung Buncheong Culture Museum, where she excavates and studies Buncheong ceramics, further refining her own craft. Jun’s craft is rooted in the idea of ‘completion’ achieved by the human hand contrary to ‘perfection’ that machines are designed for, in this age of technology. Her artistic ethos celebrates growth, continuation, and change as she further hones and develops her craftsmanship. She believes that her ‘incomplete’ yet precise geometric vessels are her catalyst for growth, and reflect her own continuous journey as an artist with the presence of her touch in every work. The ceramics Jun produces draw from traditional Korean forms, particularly the techniques of face cutting work and repeated carvings in the earthenware of the Joseon Dynasty (c. 1392-1897). After creating the forms on a wheel, Jun sets to further work on her pieces, first dividing it into sections and then delicately carving out her repeated patterns using a knife she fashions herself. She completes this prolonged process, as the surface she carved into remains sensitive, needing to be slowly dried and fired over a long time.

White Undulating Organic Vessel, Sandra Davolio
Located in New York, NY
Coral Flower II, 2023, (Porcelain, C. 14.5 in. h x 10.6 in. diam., Object No.: 4184) Davolio’s sophisticated porcelain works and their organic and natural references are influenced by the Art Nouveau style, the keen interest in the mechanics of futurism, and the minimalist and linear approach typical to Scandinavian Design. In the past 15 years, Davolio has positioned herself as an internationally renowned ceramicist. J. Lohmann Gallery discovered this talented artist in Europe in 2007 and introduced Davolio’s work to the United States in 2008. She has developed a unique oeuvre over several decades that is unparalleled. Her work conveys a deep connection to nature, and in particular to the sea. Davolio herself reveals that she “feels deep devotion and passion while working” and experiences “wonderful peaceful moments when creating something new from raw clay” with her hands. The elaborate porcelain sculptures and vessels suggest organic biomorphic forms, mostly aquatic shapes like coral reefs and undulating leaves. A graduate of The Danish School of Design, Davolio is influenced by the minimalist design aesthetic in Copenhagen, as can be seen in many of the artist’s unique and artistically important creations, in which a series of concentric lamellas emanate from the central column of a vase. She also draws inspiration from the ceramic traditions of ancient Mediterranean...
