Born in Périgueux in 1962, Denis Monfleur divides his time between his studio in Fontenay-sous-Bois, near Paris, and his studio in the Dordogne. He is one of the last sculptors of his generation to perpetuate direct carving. Since the early 2000s, he has focused on the hardest types of stone (granite, diorite, basaltic organ, volcanic lava, etc.), and excels at creating sculptures weighing several tonnes, mainly for urban use, as well as more intimate works that he himself describes as ‘domestic’.
On the fringes of fashion and official circuits, his work oscillates between archaism and modernity, abstraction and figuration, sacred and secular inspiration.
