About the Item
Hand built Ceramic Sculpture, in Gray/Green Underglaze. The Gray/Green is hard to capture: more dark gray than green, it has the feeling of the color sage green. The piece is a composite of hollow pods, elongated, pointed oval or elliptical shapes. They are individually hand-formed, attached together and fused during the firing. White stoneware clay with gray/green underglazes create a soft, powdery surface that still shows a bit of texture from the clay. It is not glazed. The Composite Series has an earthy presence, inspired by the huge bare boulders of the Anza Borrego Desert of Southern California. This unique piece also references the cactus and succulents in the area. "I look at these pieces as landscapes, but more a contemplative landscape of the mind than a replica of nature."
As with some of the other Composite Pieces in the series, this piece has one pod that is not attached, allowing the collector to "play" with the art, placing this piece as desired.
Fully hand made. Artist's initial underneath.
From the Artist's private collection, now being released to the public.

Helena Starcevic Ceramics
Helena Starcevic Ceramics produces work that straddles the line between fine and decorative art. Each piece is one of a kind, hand-built entirely by the artist in her New York studio. Taking inspiration from the natural world, Ms. Starcevic's work includes references to the stark beauty of the desert, prehistoric cave paintings, and the human form (within and without). Everything is filtered through Ms. Starcevic’s own singular aesthetic, at once quiet yet strong, meditative, and beautiful. Pieces are made in different clays and finishes, and at different scales. Groupings are available. Helena Starcevic’s ceramic pieces are held in private collections across the US and Europe. She has held numerous residencies including one at the Museum of Art and Design in New York City.

Ceramic Sculpture "Starburst" Sphere in Natural White With Blue/Gray Interior
By Helena Starcevic Ceramics
Located in New York, NY
Inspired by the viewing of the 2017 Total Eclipse of the Sun, these pieces consist of uniquely hand-formed conical shapes, like bursts or rays eminating from an interior sphere. This challenging form takes weeks to construct, many more for the multiple underglaze applications and firings required.
"Starburst" sphere in natural white with blue or gray depicts the muted tones of the underglazes used. There is no...

Unique Green Ceramic Vase by Turi Heisselberg Pedersen
By Turi Heisselberg Pedersen
Located in New York, NY
Organic Vase, 2015, (Ceramic, C. 12.1 in. h x 7.5 in. d, Object No.: 3389).
Turi Heisselberg Pedersen has, all through her career, strived to develop the vessel as abstract form and as an independent sculptural object.
As Turi notes “working in clay is to me connected with many underlying cultural bound references, but also strongly connected to nature. The very process of building in clay is a process from nature to culture. We have an inherent understanding of beauty and design evolved in thousands of years of visual impressions from our cultural history, but especially also from nature. In this context, I am aiming to create a visual and emotional reading of the objects, working with shape, rhythm, volume, movement, and texture”.
In the interplay between culture and nature, Turi’s works are inspired by geological structures and crystal formations, but also by architecture, the edged rendering of a computer drawing or folded paper shapes. Most of her faceted shapes seem to have a seed of coincidence or unplanned development, reminding one of crystal formations growing in irregular clusters.?
Heisselberg Pedersen’s sculptures are hand-modeled from stoneware and glazed with slip-glazes, which gives the works a stone-like, dry surface with a rich texture. Some of Turi’s designs...
