Hand Built Sky Blue Ceramic Spheres, Terra Sigilatta & Cobalt Oxide
About the Item
Five sky blue spheres, hand built in white ceramic stoneware. First formed as a solid sphere of clay, then hollowed out and re-attached. After much paddling, scraping and shaving to perfect the forms, they are allowed to dry. Once dry enough they are painted with many coats of a fine white liquid clay slip called "terra sigillata", the surface being burnished after each application. Once fully dry, they are fired in a low temperature kiln. After the first firing, a studio-made cobalt oxide wash is applied which is then partly wiped off. A second hotter firing reveals the crackle of the terra sigillata and the unique ways the cobalt enters into and around the surface. The depth added by the wash is fascinating, always different, showing the artist's application and the cracks in the clay. The largest sphere measures approximately 5 inches in diameter, the smallest is approximately 3 inches in diameter.
I would love to see these spheres as an installation against a stark white (or black) background. They have a warmth to them that would create a very dynamic visual.
On the other hand, given the passed year, I could see them disbursed among a family or friends as a symbol of love, friendship, shared experience, survival, and perhaps loss.
This would be an honor for me as well.

Helena Starcevic Ceramics
Helena Starcevic Ceramics produces work that straddles the line between fine and decorative art. Each piece is one of a kind, hand-built entirely by the artist in her New York studio. Taking inspiration from the natural world, Ms. Starcevic's work includes references to the stark beauty of the desert, prehistoric cave paintings, and the human form (within and without). Everything is filtered through Ms. Starcevic’s own singular aesthetic, at once quiet yet strong, meditative, and beautiful. Pieces are made in different clays and finishes, and at different scales. Groupings are available. Helena Starcevic’s ceramic pieces are held in private collections across the US and Europe. She has held numerous residencies including one at the Museum of Art and Design in New York City.
