Israeli Brutalist Iron Hanukkah Lamp by David Palombo

About the Item

This striking Hanukkah lamp, designed by renowned Israeli sculptor David Palombo (1920–1966), is a powerful example of Brutalist artistry. Forged from raw iron, the piece features an arresting composition of bold, sculptural forms. The curved branches extend outward in a dynamic, almost organic manner, while the central oval structure, with its rough-hewn texture, serves as both a focal point and a visual anchor. The candleholders, shaped with jagged, flared edges, evoke a sense of movement and raw expression. Palombo, a Turkish-born Israeli sculptor and painter, was celebrated for his ability to merge traditional materials with modernist abstraction. A graduate of the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design, he studied under and later assisted sculptor Ze’ev Ben-Zvi before becoming an instructor himself. His legacy includes the iconic gates of Yad Vashem and the Knesset—monumental works that reflect his deep engagement with historical and cultural narratives. This menorah embodies Palombo’s signature aesthetic—bold, rugged, and deeply symbolic. The interplay of brutalist ironwork and sculptural form transforms it from a ritual object into a compelling work of art, reflecting both the resilience of tradition and the expressive power of modern design.
