This striking Brutalist menorah by David Palombo masterfully fuses raw iron with natural Jerusalem stone, embodying both strength and heritage. Hand-forged with nine rugged, textured iron prongs of varying heights, it forms a dynamic, sculptural presence, with the Shamash standing tallest at its center. Each prong is uniquely pierced with a natural stone from Jerusalem, grounding the piece in the ancient city's rich history.
Palombo (1920–1966), a Turkish-born Israeli sculptor and painter, was known for his expressive, often monumental works that blended traditional materials with modernist abstraction. A graduate of the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design, he studied under and later assisted sculptor Ze’ev Ben-Zvi, eventually teaching at Bezalel himself. His legacy includes the iconic gates of Yad Vashem and the Knesset, both testaments to his ability to translate historical and cultural narratives into powerful, tactile forms.
This menorah, reminiscent of an abstracted octopus, exemplifies Palombo’s signature aesthetic—bold, organic, and deeply rooted in Israeli identity. David Palombo
David Palombo was an Israeli sculptor and painter. He was born in Turkey and immigrated to the Land of Israel with his parents in 1923. In 1940, Palombo began his studies at Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design and from 1942 as a student of sculptor Ze’ev Ben-Zvi. For some time, Palombo was an assistant at Ben-Zvi’s studio and also taught at Bezalel. Work by Palombo is included in the Judaica collection of the Jewish Museum (a well-known Hanukkah menorah). Palombo executed the impressive metal gates of the Tent of Remembrance at the Yad Vashem, the memorial to the martyrs of the holocaust, as well as the gates to the Knesset Building the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization awarded him a scholarship for study in Japan.
