Israeli Brutalist Iron and Jerusalem Stone Octopus Menorah by David Palombo

About the Item

This striking Brutalist menorah by David Palombo masterfully fuses raw iron with natural Jerusalem stone, embodying both strength and heritage. Hand-forged with nine rugged, textured iron prongs of varying heights, it forms a dynamic, sculptural presence, with the Shamash standing tallest at its center. Each prong is uniquely pierced with a natural stone from Jerusalem, grounding the piece in the ancient city's rich history. Palombo (1920–1966), a Turkish-born Israeli sculptor and painter, was known for his expressive, often monumental works that blended traditional materials with modernist abstraction. A graduate of the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design, he studied under and later assisted sculptor Ze’ev Ben-Zvi, eventually teaching at Bezalel himself. His legacy includes the iconic gates of Yad Vashem and the Knesset, both testaments to his ability to translate historical and cultural narratives into powerful, tactile forms. This menorah, reminiscent of an abstracted octopus, exemplifies Palombo’s signature aesthetic—bold, organic, and deeply rooted in Israeli identity. The interplay of iron’s brutalism with the organic warmth of Jerusalem stone creates a compelling contrast, making this piece not just a functional ritual object, but a profound artistic statement.
