About the Item

Mixed media sculpture, by noted contemporary artist, John Newman (American, b. 1952). The piece was first shown at the Tibor de Nagy Gallery solo exhibition show entitled, “Spoonfuls”, A series of small mixed-media sculptures. The unique expressive piece is constructed of straw, shell, cast acrylic, plexiglass, wood, papier mache, Japanese paper, aqua resin, gold leaf, acrylic paint, approx 9"h x 14"l x 6"w Provenance: A Private Collection: 888 Park Avenue, NYC; work appeared at the Tibor de Nagy Gallery, NYC. Solo exhibition March 26 - April 30 2016. About the artist (from the artist’s website): John Newman is a New York-based artist. He was born in Flushing, New York, and received his BA from Oberlin College. He attended the Whitney Museum Study Program in 1972, received his MFA in 1975 from the Yale School of Art, and was a fellow at the Center for Advanced Visual Studies at MIT from 1975-78. He has had over 50 one-person shows and participated in numerous group exhibitions in galleries and museums throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia. Newman’s sculpture, drawings, and prints are represented in numerous public collections including the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum, the Whitney Museum, the Tate Modern in London, the National Gallery in Canberra, the Alberina Museum in Vienna, among many others. John is the recipient of many awards and residencies, including the Rome Prize, the Civitella Ranieri Foundation, the Guggenheim Foundation, the Joan Mitchell Foundation, the Pollack-Krasner Foundation, the NEA, and a Senior Research Fulbright Grant to India. Newman is the former Director of Graduate Studies in Sculpture at the Yale School of Art. He currently teaches at the NY Studio School and the School of Visual Arts in New York City. He has been commissioned to do several large-scale sculptures for the City of Richmond, VA, Dai Nippon in Tokyo, Storm King Art Center, and Grounds for Sculpture in Hamilton, NJ.

A colorful take on his other "crates" sculptures by William August Hoffman (1920-2011), a ceramic sculptor and professor of ceramics at the prestigious Art Institute of Chicago. Originally part of a one man show at Lewis Towers, Chicago 1973. Single crate with orange glaze added to the white overall glaze to give added geometric detail. Two sided orange glaze with two rows on one side and a single row to the other side. William Hoffman (1920-2011) was a respected artist, and professor of ceramics and sculpture at the Art Institute of Chicago and Loyola University. Born 1920, Roswell, NM.
