Large abstract ceramic sculpture by Pierre Digan, France ca. 1970

About the Item

Unique large abstract ceramic sculpture by Pierre Digan (1941 -2016), France circa 1970. Digan was besides ceramist a gifted sculptor; studied at the Academy of Applied Arts in Beaune between 1956-1959, trained by painter, sculptor and ceramist Michel Lucotte. He settled in La Borne in 1960 where he stayed until 1979. Besidea La Borne he also spent time in Vallauris and Auribeau-Sur-Siagne in the same period together with his former wife and ceramist Barbara Delfosse. The quality and recognizable style in both traditional grès (stoneware) and decorative architectural elements contributes to his success. In the 1980's Digan focussed more on sculptures than on small ceramics, several works are exposed in public spaces. This sculpture is a unique work from his earlier years, two other sculptures in the same style with similar shapes are known, only lesa abstract than this reclining figure composed of 'stones'. The sculpture has always been outside and shows a stunning patina, both beautiful indoors as outdoors. Made from solid grès and therefore very heavy. In beautiful original condition.
