Large Bronze Oloid Sand Cast Sculpture by Labor Limae, the Netherlands 2021
About the Item
This unique bronze oloid sculpture was sand cast in bronze by Labor Limae. The manually finished surface shows its distinctive imperfections that specifically show the 4000-year-old sand casting method that was used to give form to it.
Sand casting, also known as sand moulded casting, is a metal casting process characterized by using sand as the mould material. The pureness of this sculpture gives it a sincere appearance, while the shape remains interesting from every point of view. The ‘oloid’ is a geometric shape, which was discovered in 1929 by the Swiss-born mathematician, sculptor and anthroposophy enthusiast, Paul Schatz. By definition, if the distance of two centres of disk is equal to the radius, then the convex hull produces another figure that rolls smoothly and is known as the oloid. Due to these curved surfaces, the sculpture produces a wonderful light reflection, which emphasizes the richness of the bronze alloy. This remarkable shape cannot be found anywhere in nature, which is partially why it is so striking to the human eye. The sculpture is hollow, therefore it is lighter than it might appear. Thanks to this attribute, it can be placed both indoors and outdoors to complement any interior.
To elevate this piece’s beauty even further, the untreated bronze will surely gain a beautiful patina over time. This one-of-a-kind sculpture comes in a limited edition - only 25 pieces were created - and is inscribed with its serial number.
