Large Prehistoric Neolithic Flint Axe

$10,500

About

A large, thin-butted Neolithic flint axe found in Mauprévoir, France. Knapped from pink-brown flint, with a white grey streak on one side and with beautiful marks resembling stitching along the edges. This elegant handaxe was made during the period of transition from hunting and gathering to a more sedentary, farm-oriented lifestyle. Thanks to their power to shape the landscape and facilitate life, handaxes played a crucial role in this revolution, which laid the foundations for the rise of civilisation. "Didn't this man … when he picked up a stone to give it a shape useful to his needs … open the way for all sculptors and architects to come ?" Jacques Boucher de Perthes, Antiquités celtiques et antédiluviennes, vol. 1 (1847-1864) Height on stand: 11 1/2 inches (29.2 cm) Provenance: Private collection, found in Mauprévoir, France, 1923.
