About the Item

Leslie Thornton (British, 1925-2016), "History of Printing", no signature observed, mounted on wood plinth. An arresting and fascinating piece, this tall floor sculpture has strong presence and heft. In 1951 Thornton graduated from the Royal College of Art and joined the Royal Society of British Sculptors. His chosen medium was metal so this particular sculpture is unusual in that it is executed in clay/plaster. Thornton's sculpture is represented in major international private and public collections including: the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, Venice; the Nelson Rockefeller Collection; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Arts Council of Great Britain; Leeds City Art Gallery; Northern Arts Council; Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, City of Art Museum, St Louis, US; the Albright-Knox Gallery, Buffalo, New York; the Felton Bequest, Australia; St Louis Priory, Missouri, US. Dimensions: 37" height x 14"diameter (plaster), 43"h (total) Condition: Good. No condition issues observed. Some dirt and dust observed. Ready to place. Provenance: From the Collection of Dr. Leonard D. Hamilton Leonard D. Hamilton studied at Balliol College, Oxford, and Trinity College, Cambridge, before moving to the US in 1949. He was a brilliant researcher who played an important role in the discovery of the structure of DNA. A keen art collector, Dr. Hamilton owned works by the likes of Whistler, Matisse, Picasso and Candido Portinari.
