Patina to steel with no apparent breaks or damage. Lorraine Crawford was born in Chicago, Illinois. She pursued various eclectic interests from choreography to karate all of which contributed her elegant mastery of the visual arts. After graduating from the University of Chicago with a B.S. in Biochemistry in 1942, Crawford returned to study fine art in 1947. Crawford also attended the University of California in Berkeley from 1951- 1953. Crawford took up Japanese sumi (or sumi-e) painting under Master Chiuro Obata for a period twenty years between 1955 and 1975. She also eventually taught the technique for the Japan Society and the Arts and Crafts Cooperative in Berkeley. In 1950 the artist undertook the great creative task of choreographing, designing the set, stage and costumes for and performing in a ballet titled "Kalpa." She also completed her black belt training with the All-Japan Karate-do Federation. In the June 3, 1967 issue of New Vistas a reporter wrote of Crawford's various combined experiences: "Although working primarily in oil, she considers the main influence of her style and technique to be an oriental outlook on painting and philosophy. Her art grows out of contemplation of feeling and is expressed in a very personal symbolism - magical, mythical and visionary." Crawford was an accomplished sculptor. She created a large number of welded iron works of abstracted human figures. Many of her iron sculptures are six to seven feet tall and are reminiscent of the strange elongated figures of Giacometti. Solo Exhibitions: 1965 and 1966 Grete Williams, San Francisco 1965 Tuomala Gallery, Fort Bragg 1964 and 1965 ACCI, Berkeley 1964 Virgo Gallery, Sausilito 1963 Sam's, Tiburon 1963 and 1965 Cruchon, Berkeley 1961 Gallery Nine, Berkeley 1960 Art Unlimited (Hansen Gallery), San Francisco 1959 Bakersfield College, Bakersfield 1959 KPFA, Berkeley 1958 Contemporary Arts, Berkeley 1957 Opus One, San Francisco 1956 and 1958 Lucien Labaudt Art gallery, San Francisco 1956 Blind Lemon, Berkeley 1955 Able I, Berkeley 1950 University of Chicago, Chicago Group Exhibitions: 1961 Berkeley Art Festival, Blue Ribbon Section 1959 Berkeley-El Cerrito Art Festival, Purchase Award 1959 Monterey Jazz Festival 1958 San Francisco Women Artists Annual 1948 Old Northwest Territory Art Exhibition, Springfield, Illinois Source: AskART

There is one pinprick glaze nick or skip, possibly from production. This bowl is highly carved so it's very difficult to see or notice. One "tooth" on the edge may have an older repair, it's difficult to tell but we've added several images and priced accordingly. See photos for details.
