Michel Choqueux signed Colonne Torse sculpture - France, 1950s

About the Item

A sculpture with a twist. Michel Choqueux began working with wood at 14, in the workshop shared by his father and grandfather, who were both carpenters. His love of the material is evident here: the oak grain ripples along the helical form, heightened by the cerusing contrast. The twist feels elemental. It’s a pattern repeatedly found in nature, from wisteria trunks spiralling skyward to DNA’s double helix. It also carries architectural weight: known as the Solomonic column, this form appears in early Christian basilicas and recurs through Byzantine, Romanesque, and Baroque design.
