Mid-Century Cubist Bronze Sculpture Abstract, Att, Straesser / henry moore style

About the Item

Large bronze sculpture of a sitting couple in expressionist / cubist style, attributed to Herbert Strässer (1930-2005) and with a very interesting provenance: the private collection of architect Walter Brune (1926-2021). Brune was a German architect, urban planner, and real estate entrepreneur, who collaborated with Marcel Beuer, amongst others. This sculpture with its golden patina, textures emphasize the simple geometric shapes, interlocking planes and abstract arrangements. The sculpture dates from the post war period, circa 1960. This stunning piece is attributed to German artist Herbert (1930-2005). In style is linked to avant-garde artists like Zadkine, Lipchitz and Archipenko. About the artist Herbert Strässer (1930-2005) was a German sculptor. His most famous work is the sculpture of the Golden Europe. Herbert Strässer attended the State School for Arts and Crafts in Saarbrücken from 1947 to 1952, where he was a student of Hannes Neuner, and from 1952 to 1954 the École national supérieure des beaux-arts de Paris. From 1954 to 1955 he learned experimental photography from Otto Steinert in Saarbrücken. In 1955 he began sculpting. In 1957 he took part in the International Auschwitz Competition. Between 1959 and 1966 Strässer worked as an art teacher. In addition, in 1962 he was a guest at the Symposium of European Sculptors in Berlin and in 1963 he received a grant from the Saarland Ministry of Education. Between 1963 and 1967 Straesser won several prizes in competitions. From 1961 to 1971 he stayed in Berlin for study and work purposes. In 1971 he took part in the Olympic competition in Munich. In 1972 Straesser moved to Ludwigshafen am Rhein and in 1973 to Berlin. In 1990 he acquired the "Hoffmeyer-Schmiede" in Bücken, a historic two-poster house from 1621, in which he lived and worked from then on. Work Herbert Strässer created an extensive and varied body of work, including reliefs, sculptures, terracottas, bronzes and steel constructions. He chose his working materials from a wide variety of materials: plaster, wood, stone, steel, terracotta, bronze. Some works were created for interior and exterior design of public spaces and can be seen in some cities.
