"Movement" White Composite Material by Joan Carl Strauss

About the Item

This sculpture is crafted from a white composite material by Joan Strauss Carl. This art piece, whose main influence is abstract expressionism, prompts the viewer to explore the interplay between form and expression. If you spend every day a little moment staring at this stunning unfinished sculpture, you will discover little by little the incredibly strong work of Strauss, which can express in the same sculpture following the angle you look at it, the strength, softness, and movement. Allow your gaze to wander, uncover more of its versatile character, then witness the interplay of forces within this piece. Such is the marvel of this creation, that every perspective yields a facet of freedom's expression. Like the chronicle of a liberated soul, this sculpture tells a tale, its form a testament to the spirit of an independent woman. Joan Strauss Carl was a Los Angeles artist, teacher, and humanitarian activist. She was a past president of the Los Angeles Art Association and has left a formidable body of her work and commissions in private collections, museums, and houses of worship. She was a prolific sculptor and painter. After studying art in Cleveland and at the Art Institute of Chicago, she traveled West. Her decision had proved smart as she quickly had six one-man shows and was consistently accepted in the very important invitational, juried exhibitions from San Francisco to San Diego. A quote from her exhibition: Joan Carl – One-Man Sculpture Show. “My work is my way of life. It is a constant search and examination and questioning of ideas as well as form and substance, and yet each new creation is a re-affirmation of respect and love of humanity and life.” Joan was represented by Paideia Gallery in Los Angeles and resided in Sherman Oaks, California for many years. As a sculptor, she worked in many mediums, including bronze, terracotta, stone, and wood.

  • Dancing Sculptures in Resin, a Pair
    Located in Pasadena, CA
Sculpture is at its most essential, a physical, tactile medium, and need to be touched to be experienced. Handmade resin sculpture is an intricate process that entails the mastery of various skills and techniques. This pair of dancers, in gun metal patina finish resin, is not just a duo, but a conversation. Two bodies standing up on their respective wooden base, each with their own intricate details, height, singular twists, interstices and curves, ending by energetically coming together to become one, turning the static and the individual in a dynamic couple. As you let your hands wandering, closed eyes, you can sense fluidity in their movements, brought to life by soft and rounded lines. Every gesture and sweep emits a unique emotion, as if the two dancers were sharing a whispered conversation, inviting the viewer to witness their intimate exchange. By taking this sculpture home...

  • Bronze Sculpture Austrian Carl Kauba Rodeo Cowboy Marble, circa 1900
    By Carl Kauba
    Located in Hamilton, Ontario
Early 20th century bronze on Marble slab sculpture of a bronco rodeo cowboy on horse by Austrian artist Carl Kauba. Weighing a heavy 18 pounds with a solid marble base, Kauba has amazing intricate detail from the reins to the cowboys face and horses hoofs. Carl Kauba (1865-1922) Carl Kauba was born August 13, 1865 in Vienna, Austria. The son of a shoemaker, Kauba chose to follow his calling into the world of art. Collectors now rank him in a class with Remington and Russell as one of the great portrayers of American Western. His subjects were typically Native American Indians, Cavalrymen, Cowboys, and Roughriders. In addition to his American bronzes, Kauba produced a lifetime’s worth of Austrian statuary. His work became fully appreciated on both sides of the Atlantic. Carl studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna under professor Laufenberg. Later he would study at the academies under Carl Waschmann and Stefan Schwartz. Next, he went to Paris in 1886 to further study before he set off for the U.S. Kauba’s fascination with the West was fired by the stories of the German writer, Carl May, whose tales of Western adventure were well known throughout Europe. Most authorities feel that he was about twenty-five years old when he traveled widely throughout the American West. He then returned to Austria with voluminous notes, sketches, and several models of Western sculpture...
