About the Item

A Levallois Flint Core, from Fransu, Somme, Northern France Middle Palaeolithic, Mousterian, circa 100,000–40,000 years ago A wonderfully tactile artefact, offering a glimpse into the ingenuity of Neanderthal toolmaking. Struck from mottled grey and white flint with a beautiful cloud-like pattern across its concave surface, this finely worked Levallois core shows the classic preparation associated with the Mousterian tradition. The flake scars across its surface reveal a deliberate and methodical approach - flakes were carefully struck from the core to produce sharp-edged tools. An old handwritten inscription reading: “Fransu (Somme). Ancienne collection Bouly de Ribeaucourt. Etiquette: ‘Hache mousterienne’ / ‘Moustérien ancien’, d’après V. Commont.” Fransu, in the Somme department of northern France, lies within a region central to the early study of European prehistory. Provenance: Fransu, Somme, northern France Collection of Bouly de Ribeaucourt Collection of François Bigot (1950–2009) Auction Art Rémy Le Fur & Associés, 28th September 2021, lot 116

Roman Marble Head of a Satyr
Located in London, GB
Head of a Satyr Roman, circa 2nd - 3rd century AD Carved and highly polished marble An extremely fine marble head of a satyr, depicted with ivy wreath, curly hair and pointed goat’s ear, the full lips slightly parted to reveal the creature’s clenched teeth. The head was once part of a relief with visible fragmentation on the left side. Almost completely worked in the round and carefully polished, the skill of the sculptor is particularly remarkable given the confined working space available for a relief carving, such as this. The Roman Imperial Period marked the expansion of the political and cultural influence of the Roman Empire. The period began with the reign of Augustus in 27 BC, immediately following Caesar’s assassination which ultimately ended Rome’s time as a republic. Soon after, Augustus’ defeat of Anthony and...

The finest strikers were finished with precious metals and decorated with repoussé and inlaid stones. This leather flint pouch is decorated with silver and gold plated metalwork and three large beads of turquoise and red coral. The mechag hangs from a simple leather strap and three decorative leather beads hang below. The pouch contains two Tibetan prayer flags...
