About the Item

AFTER PAUL EVANS MID CENTURY MODERN MONUMENTAL BRUTALIST FINE ART DIRECT METAL SCULPTURE! MAGNIFICENT TOWER STRUCTURE! IRON, BRASS, BRONZE & WOOD BASE CIRCA 1956 Similar to Diego Giacometi Approximate Dimensions: Large 34" Tower/ 13" Wide & Deep This is the Holy Grail for Mid Century abstract sculpture collectors! Here, an epic, enormous structure of worked metal towers in a raw state of visual tension! This abstract sculpture is the epitome of Brutalism. It has a structural rawness and uses both texture and space to convey a unique modern art message to the world. This type of art was so impressive, that Science Fiction artists who did covers for paperbacks, would employ this "tower of metal" in numerous sci-fi covers depicting a future or alien world! It hinted at a post-apocalyptic future or the hard to comprehend art of a highly advanced alien civilization. This is the sort of art that found its way into the best collections of the period. Philip Johnson, John Entenza and other mid century art icons had similar works in their extensive modern art collections. Very much in the manner of the worked metal sculptures of Pail Evans and Diego Giacometti who shaped metal with this new modern creativity! During the 1950s sculpture actually supplanted paintings in many of the world's finest galleries and had greater influence in the popular cultural expression of the period. With this metal sculpture, iron has been fused with alloys to create a towering structure! It rests on four elongated pieces of metal and appears to defy gravity and float in space! This work is a symphony of texture and perspectives! Layers of horizontal and vertical patterns of metal give the eye an endless variety of visual depths and make this piece a true vision! This rare & marvelous metal work is in fine vintage condition! So few of these larger mid century metal sculptures have survived. No visible identification markings. Typical age wear to the metal and wood. Metal work still is very structurally sound. This piece perhaps typifies and encapsulates the NY modern art scene in the fifties. This is truly a significant & important acquisition for the discerning collector! This will make a powerful visual and artistic statement in your NY penthouse, Palm Springs atomic ranch or West Palm Beach estate!
