About the Item
VERTEBREATH is part poem, part sculpture. Spiritual references inform the new piece, celebrating the invisible presence of our most precious gift. The breath is the spine of life, the sacred essence we ignore, suspended in the primordial void it awaits your birth with a bated blow, she dances between worlds, inflating rock to bone - she is the hidden engine of life.
Inspired by Sufi poetry and the Japanese tradition of Wabi-sabi, the abstract sculpture is made from steel with a labour intensive patination process to give a special dark finish. The piece is meticulously hand crafted from more than 240 individual components, emphasising the welding process and the raw beauty of weathered steel. Each of the 24 blades are punctuated with tiny holes allowing air to move through the artwork as it leaps and twists to life. The holes form word patterns 'IN' & 'EX' alternating on each blade to symbolise the life-giving inhale-exhale exchange.
The piece would suit both interior and exterior (IN-EX) settings - bringing a dynamic energy to your home, garden or office. It would also suit other contemporary spaces where there is a strong emphasis on health, wellbeing and/or spiritual practices.

Sapien is the alias and studio of artist/sculptor Steve Anwar MRSS (Member of the Royal Society of Sculptors). The studio creates abstract sculptures for high-profile clients like: Yorkshire Sculpture Park, Sky Arts, Wentworth Pewter & Taylor Wimpey. Based in Sheffield, England the artist produces sculptures for private collectors & larger site-specific artworks for public realm projects, fusing elemental materials with traditional fabrication techniques. Sapien born and raised in the steel city likes to draw from his dual-heritage bringing together eastern philosophies with the industrial heritage of the North of England to make truly unique pieces for a range of projects and private commissions.
