1930s Art Deco French Faience Centerpiece by Charles Lemanceau for Saint-Clément
About the Item
This is an iconic art deco centerpiece from the famous French earthenware factory Saint Clément, established in 1758. The model was designed by the French sculpture Charles Lemanceau (1905-1980) and put into production in the mid-1930s. This specific piece has the advantage of being glazed in the the famous green "trademark" color of Saint Clément. The brown glazed version is more common and not so hard to find.
Charles Lemanceau was one of the most popular sculptures of the art decor era and he was well-known for his stylized animal sculptures. He designed decorative objects for several French manufacturers until his retirement in 1967.
This faience figurine is referred to as model 987-2 and features a stylized deer standing in vegetation. It is one of the larger animal sculptures made by Charles Lemanceau for Saint Clément, a real centerpiece. Despite the fact that it is molded hollow, it still weights an impressive 1.6 kg / 3.5 lbs. It should be noted that the two sides of the sculpture are slightly different.
On this specific piece the glaze has covered almost all of the makers mark found on the right side of the base (see photo), a rather frequent phenomenon when it comes to the green glaze. The inscription should read "SCt France 987-2". The inside of this piece has also been glazed green.
In very good vintage condition. This piece has no cracks, no chips and no repairs. Some very minor signs of wear on the surface coherent with age and use.
