American 19th Century Cast Brass Eagle and Serpent Doorstop

American cast brass eagle and serpent doorstop. The eagle with spread wings is perched on a rocky base with an entwined serpent threatening him. This representation of an iconic American symbol is powerful. This is quite a heavy casting, no lead was needed to further weight it for its duty to keep unruly doors open. Of course today doorstops are also often used in bookshelves to keep heavy books in place or on mantels as decorations, mid-19th century.
