About the Item

A rare Art Deco animal sculpture in opalescent moulded pressed glass depicting a heron, a bird that evokes a certain poise, assurance and serenity. This magnificent piece was conceived and created by the designer Charles Graffart. Period: Art Deco Circa: 1935 Dimensions: Height: 12cm x Length: 8.5cm x Width: 8.5cm Base thickness : 3cm   Charles Graffart was a versatile Belgian artist born in 1863.  He is credited with a wide range of artistic works, including paintings, prints, sculpture, watercolour drawings and objects. He worked with Val-Saint-Lambert in the early 1930s, when it launched a range of moulded glassware, the Luxval range, in a bid to compete with Czechoslovakia which, after the Wall Street crash of the early 1930s, was beginning to invade the market with more democratic items with great success. The work is similar to that of various French editions such as Sabino, Verlys and René Lalique...

  • Natural Stone Sculpture - Sodalite - China - Late 19th Century Period
    Located in CRÉTEIL, FR
A very fine piece of natural stone, Sodalite, made in China. Finely chiselled, this large statue depicts a scene of life in which several ancient symbols stand side by side, such as the Phoenix, swallows, a horse, earthly abundance with its luxuriant vegetation, fruit, but also food from the ocean and its generous fish, a man, a woman and a child. First discovered in Greenland in 1806, Sodalite was analysed by a Scottish chemist 5 years later (1811), Mr Thomas Thomson. Several long years went by without it achieving any real success. It was not until 1891 that the stone was recognised as an ornamental stone.    It was during a diplomatic trip to Canada in 1901 that Mary de Teck (wife of King George V) discovered Sodalite and fell under the spell of this natural stone.  The princess ordered a large quantity of Sodalite to decorate her London flats. Sodalite quickly became fashionable.   Period: Late 19th century - Napoleon III Dimensions: Total height with base: 92cm x Width: 31.5cm x Depth: 27cm Dimensions of wooden base: Height: 7cm x Length: 25cm x Width: 23cm But what do these symbols mean? The phoenix, a mythological bird, symbolises purification and rebirth, as it is said to rise from its own ashes.   This magnificent bird is also synonymous with good fortune, opportunity and luck in Asian cultures. In feng shui, the phoenix is also one of the four celestial animals (sometimes also known as the red bird or red raven). The red phoenix...

    Located in CRÉTEIL, FR
Magnificent sculpture named "the tiger with the bulldog" is a unique piece. Mixed technique, particularity of its creator, mastering the recycling of all materials at hand, always with an ecological concern, conveying messages on what he lived or wanted to denounce in his time. Period: 20th century Dimensions: Height: 39cm x width: 25cm x depth: 16cm. 24 carat leaf gilding This feline is not chosen by chance, the tiger is a strong symbol of vitality, unpredictability, strength but also of self-confidence. It also strongly symbolizes ambition and justice. On his head, like a cap, the face of the man with his eyes raised to the sky. On his back, like a backpack, the bulldog's head. The bulldog, with its massive, muscular, stocky body as well as a powerful jaw evokes strength. His strength, his tenacity, his willingness to fight stronger animals. This sculpture certainly found its inspiration in England, or Aaron Hinojosa, the first country where he stayed after leaving Mexico. Victorian...
