Largest and rare antique Black Forest inkstand. If you are a collector of decorative and rare Black Forest antiques then this entirely handcarved inkstand could be gracing your home or office soon. The 'auerhahn' (as it is called in Germany) not only is a very rare Black Forest carving to find, in real life too there are only very few of these majestic birds left in the Black Forest. Besides being a highly decorative, sculptural antique, this inkstand also is the perfect 'desk tool' if you still write letters with a pen or with a dip pen, because there is room enough in the wide and deep 'pen bed'. With carvings all around this sizeable inkstand this rarity is beautiful to look at from every angle. The quality in the details and the overal balance of the 'composition' mixed with the warm patina of the antique wood is what makes this aesthetically pleasing inkstand a real gem to own and look at. There are a few imperfections and we have described those in the 'Restoration Work & Modifications' and the 'additional comments' section of this listing. Have you also noticed the tree trunk design inkwells with their (probably original) glass liners and striking brass hinges and the inlaid glass eyes? They could not be in better condition. Repaired: We believe that, at some point in time, the upper beak was replaced (see image 17) and, as shown in our final image, a repair was once done to the fallen tree stump on which this marvelous bird is standing.
