Art Deco Crackle Ceramic Antelope Deer by Charles Lemanceau, France 1920s
About the Item
Designed by Charles Lemanceau (1905-1980) and made by Saint-Clement Factory, France, this typical Art Deco crackled glaze ceramic sculpture features a couple of deers or antelopes. The artwork is signed on the edge of the base: "Lemanceau" and has a "France" stamped underside.
The piece is in good condition. It does have a few minor chips off the glaze, as is often the case with this type of material, but they do not significantly affect the overall appearance. Check the close-up.
Measurements: 13.75 in wide (35 cm) x 3.57 in deep (9 cm) x 9.07 in high (23 cm).
Note:
Charles Lemanceau (1905-1980) was a specialist in animal sculptures and one of the most important sculptors in the French Art Deco period. He was best known for his ceramic sculptures and the use of that typical glaze with the crackled pattern.
In 1923, he worked for Primavera (Le Printemps Department Store trademark in Paris).
In 1925, he exhibited in the Salon d'Automne with other great names of the period: Eugene Printz, Louis Sognot, Van Dongen, Vlaminck, Raoul Dufy, Jean Dunand, Henri Matisse, Le Corbusier, Jules Leleu, Robert Mallet-Stevens, Fernand Leger and Maurice Utrillo. During this period, he worked for Faienceries Saint-Clement and DIM.
In 1930, he also sculpted a gazelle for "la Maîtrise," Galeries Lafayette Department Store Art Studio, antelopes in 1929 (sculpture no. 1 of the 1930s catalog of Saint-Clément earthenware), and greyhounds for Pomone, the workshop of The Bon Marché Department Store in Paris, and a cat for Manufrance in 1931. He also worked for Sainte-Radegonde during the same period.
