Maison Lecan is pleased to present this rare and striking ceramic sculpture of a stylized horse, signed “Pouchain” on the underside.
Crafted in the 1960s, this piece is a fine example of Robert Pouchain’s most expressive work, made during his time in Dieulefit, in the south of France.
The figure, with its strong animal presence and totemic silhouette, captures the essence of Pouchain’s bestiary: raw, playful, and deeply rooted in the earth.
The black glaze, subtly shifting between matte and satin reflections, gives a deep tactile quality to the surface. Carved textures—visible in the mane and tail—contrast beautifully with the rounded, organic mass of the body.
This is either a unique piece or one produced in very limited numbers, a perfect embodiment of Pouchain’s poetic ceramic language at the intersection of folk art and modern sculpture.
