About the Item

A very fine stoneware small horse head sculpture raku glazed in bright blue and white glazes with a black craquelure finish by renowned ceramic artist Eric James Mellon (British, 1925-2014) and dated 1982 with the date partially obscured by glaze. Trained at the Central School of Arts and Crafts in London in the 1940’s Eric is more renowned for his figurative work, often including nudes decorated with ash glazes. This unusual and abstract figural piece is formed as a horse head with a snout shape nose with incised features and eyes with ears and appears to be wearing a harness. The hollow piece is hand formed from a flat sheet and is hand decorated in bright blue glazes on a white ground with green circular patterns to one side and with black elements to the craquelure effect. The sculpture is signed to the inside with a black running fox mark and includes the date 1982. Provenance: From the private collection of a West Country lady and acquired directly from the artist. In good condition.
