A Grand Tour Desk Top Model of the Capitoline Lion, Italy Circa 1800

About the Item

A very handsome ceramic Grand Tour desk top model of the Capitoline Lion. The molded recumbent figure of a lion shown outstretched atop an integral rectangular base. The origin of the Capitoline Lion is derived from an ancient marble group known as 'Lion Attacking a Horse' 325-300 B.C., that was discovered during the 16th century on Capitoline Hill in Rome. The work is now considered to be the iconic symbol of Rome and is in the permanent collection of the Capitolini Museum in Rome.
