About the Item

Full of energy and élan, this rare sculpture by Waylande Gregory, dating from the 1940s, depicts a zebra in mid-air, looking behind with elegant unconcern. The ceramic form is glazed in a lovely off-white glaze, and is mounted on a dark-stained walnut plinth. Gregory was a renowned a WPA sculpture and innovative ceramicist and produced a wide range of sculptures and wares in ceramic beginning in his college days, through his years working with Lorado Taft and later when he created large multi-figure pieces for WPA projects, institutions and public parks. A major retrospective of Gregory's work was recently organized by the University of Richmond's Museums.

"Rearing Goat, " Highly Stylized Art Deco Sculpture, Cleveland School

This unique Art Deco sculpture -- carved, not molded -- depicts a highly-stylized goat figure with the ears of a satyr rearing up over a mound of Art Deco tendrils. The mythological feeling of the goat is reminiscent of the animals that romped to the strains of Beethoven's Sixth Symphony in "Fantasia," and the detail is very fine. This piece, though not signed, comes from an artist from the Cleveland...
