Pair English Salt /Glazed Spaniels, c. 1830

About the Item

This is an imposing pair of stoneware saltglaze spaniels that were made at the Briddon Pottery in Brampton Derbyshire circa 1830. They are a unique design and historically significant as they are probably the inspiration for figures that were later copied by the Staffordshire potters in the Victorian period. With defined wavy coats, a curling tail, and separate legs, the are seated upon elaborate large oval bases decorated with flowers and leaves supported on paw feet. These magnificent figures are a testamont to the English potter's skill and artistry in the early 19th century.
