Pair of molossi dogs in green marble Alps

About the Item

The pair consists of two reproductions that can be traced back to the Grand Tour period, thus between the late 18th and early 19th centuries, of a Molosso marble sculpture of Roman origin. The artifact, found in the mid-1800s, is probably a copy of a Hellenistic Greek bronze original. It is known as Molossus Jennings, named after the collector and antique dealer who first acquired it, Henry Constantine Jennings. The sculpture had been restored by Bartolomeo Cavaceppi, who made a terracotta version, probably as a model for the restoration. Molossus Jennings is currently in the British Museum in London. Very few animal sculptures have come down to us from the ancient world. The two Alpi green marble reproductions presented here are themselves rare objects, as they are beautifully crafted sculptures with a function not merely decorative but also as bookends. It is not ruled out that they were produced by Roman marble workers from ancient material, considering that in the past there were deposits of it from which such craftsmen could draw.
