Swiss Black Forest Hand Carved Bear, circa 1900

About the Item

A wonderful black Forest sculpture of a striding bear carved in both a realistic and expressionistic style. The bear shown walking forward on all four legs, nose low to the ground. The successful rendition of the posture of the bear, her paws flat to the ground, show the artist as a true observer of nature. The style of chip carving give the bear a quality that makes it feel alive. Clearly the carver was an accomplished artist. Lovely deep brown patina. Measures: 8.75 inches wide 5.25 high 4 deep.
