Two Massive Late Qing Cloisonné Enamel Models of Cranes

About the Item

Two massive late Qing cloisonné enamel models of cranes Chinese, circa 1900 Measures: Height 187cm, width 52cm, depth 50cm These extraordinary Chinese cloisonné enamel models of cranes are finely and realistically modelled and strikingly large, each measuring 195cm in height. They are also particularly rare double-form models with each model showing a pair of cranes—one larger and smaller—making a total of four cranes. The cranes are formed with cloisonné enamel bodies and gilt metal beaks, legs, and feet. The white coloured enamel bodies are highlighted with black, grey, and red decorations, with the two larger cranes each shown holding two peaches in their beaks. The cranes stand on black naturalistically rendered bases. Several single-form examples are held in important Chinese collections, including several pairs on display at The Palace Museum in Beijing, China. Cranes have been depicted in Chinese art in all mediums for centuries, symbolising peace, long life and a connection between nature and heaven. The peaches held in their beaks are another Chinese symbol for long life.

Two Meissen Porcelain Chinese Nodding Pagode Figures
By Meissen Porcelain
Located in London, GB
Called ‘pagode’ (or pagoda) figures, these Meissen Porcelain models are based on the sculptures of deities found in pagoda temples in the Far East. Meissen began to produce these kinds of porcelain figures in the early 18th century, prompted by the demand for the Far Eastern ‘pagodes’ being imported into Europe at this time. The Meissen factory in Germany was founded in 1709 and was the first producer of true porcelain wares in Europe. The company’s main patron was Augustus II the Strong, the Elector of Saxony and King of Poland. Meissen was, and continues to be, famous for its tableware, vases, candelabra, animal sculptures and figures, like this pair, which were often graceful and light-hearted in character. These models feature the Meissen mark of the two blue crossed swords on their undersides. These porcelain models take the form of a Chinese couple...

Pair of Cloisonné Enamel Decorated and Silver Gilt Eggs
Located in London, GB
Pair of cloisonné enamel decorated and silver gilt eggs Russian, 20th Century Height 7cm, diameter 5cm This duo of Russian antique eggs, artfully hand-fashioned from gilded silver and bedecked with painstakingly rendered cloisonné enamel, serve as proud emblems of the nation's rich lineage of gem-studded eggs. Crafted from sterling silver, as attested by the coveted '84' zolotnik stamp, each egg gleams with a seductive sheen, their interiors revealing the full splendour of gilded silver. The enamel floral arabesques, a hallmark of Russian craftsmanship, undulate elegantly across the egg's shell in an intricate ballet. These arabesques are arranged in a patterned circular band around the eggs, with larger circular, floral emblems taking centre stage in the body of the pieces. The bold blues of the enamel - in varying shades, from azure to navy - are offset by vibrant ruby red accents, making for an arresting visual contrast. Deeply rooted in a vibrant cultural tradition, these Russian eggs...
