About the Item

‘Penthesilia, Queen of the Amazons’, A cire perdue (lost wax) Art Deco bronze statue by Marcel Bouraine cast around 1925 by Susse Frerès foundry of Paris, and signed BOURAINE in the bronze. In the mythology of ancient Greece, Penthesilia was an Amazonian Queen, the daughter of Ares, the God of War and grand-daughter of Zeus, King of the Gods. According to the legend, Penthesilia killed her sister Hippolyte with a spear while hunting deer, causing Penthesilia so much grief, she wished only to die. As a warrior and an Amazon, she must do so honourably and in battle. She therefore joined the Trojan War, defending Troy from its invaders. She is said to have been killed by Achilles, who was awe struck by her beauty and was inconsolable after her death. He in turn, was killed by Paris, by a poisoned arrow to his heel, said to have been guided by Apollo. Marcel-André Bouraine is thought to have created this impressive symbol of Art Deco in 1925, and it is known to exist in three sizes, 20 inch; 32 inch; and a unique version of 75 inches in length. A note about the Artist: Marcel-André Bouraine was born in Pontoise, near Paris in 1886, and studied under the great sculptor Jean-Alexandre Falguiere (1841-1900) who had re-introduced and re emphasized realism in 19th Century sculpture. Bouraine served in the French Army during World War I and was captured and interned in Switzerland until 1918. It was shortly afterwards that his unique talent began to shine. In 1922, he exhibited at the Salon des Tuileries, and the following year exhibited for the first of numerous occasion at the prestigious Salon d’Automne. Bouraine’s high Art Deco style was exciting and popular, and his work was in strong demand. He mainly used the prestigious Susse Frères foundry (which had been established in the 18th Century) and executed a number of works for Arthur Goldscheider’s La Stele and l’Evolution groups. He also worked in glass being commissioned by maître verrier Gabriel Argy-Rousseau (1885-1953) to create a series of pate-de-verre figurines, fountains and luminaires. He also executed two major commissions for the prestigious 1937 Paris International Exhibition.
