About the Item

CARVED AND POLYCHROMED BUST OF A YOUNG SAINT Probably Spanish, circa late 17th century 13 1/2" H (total), 8 3/8" H (bust only) x 4 3/4" D x 4 3/4" W (base) A carved and polychromed wooden bust of a young saint, the statue features an exquisitely modeled figure and retains much of its original gesso along with fragments of the original pigment clinging to an aged surface. The finely carved features with downcast original glass eyes, narrow lips and softly flowing hair reflect a maturity beyond his years, a somber sense of wisdom and an inner serenity that is immediately evocative of Christ as a Youth - however, the absence of any storytelling elements leave his identity in the realm of conjecture. The figure was likely once part of a larger ecclesiastical composition such as a retable or processional figure that would have given the viewer the much needed context. Now mounted on a 20th-century wooden plinth, the bust retains just enough of its original polychromy to give some hint at the skill of the painter. The expression and treatment of the hair suggest Spanish influence, specifically the fabulous carved devotionals of Granada. Condition: A very fine overall natural patina to the surface, most of the original polychromy worn away along with most gesso. Retains original glass eyes. Minor age-related losses and stable shrinkage cracks; mounted on a modern block base.
