About

Diana, gazing stoically into the distance and depicted with the crescent moon diadem upon her head, is delicately rendered in this marble bust; the pure white marble juxtaposed against the flowing gilt bronzed drapery that wraps around her shoulders, sitting on a green marble base. In Roman mythology, Diana was the goddess of the hunt, having the power to talk to and control animals, and was revered for her strength, athletic grace, purity, distinct beauty and hunting skill.

Born in Schierbach, Germany, Henri Weigéle (1858-1927) studied sculpture in Paris under Jules Franchesi, who had himself been a pupil of François Rude. He won the Honorable mention at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1893, followed by a third class medal in 1907 and a first class medal in 1909.
