About the Item

Stunning and rare bronze bust with important leather 'tag' for provenance. This antique and mint bronze sculpture is of a timeless beauty and we are confident it will soon be enjoyed by a new custodian (possibly a museum). Gaston Hauchecorne was a French artist known for ethnographic and humorous sculptures and this good size and mint condition bronze is the perfect example of that genre. Hauchecorne was born in Le Havre in 1880 and died in Paris in 1945. He worked as a teacher and interpreter in Beijing before becoming the director of the consulate in Chongqing. Among other places, Hauchecorne exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français and that too is why this particular antique bronze is extra special. The Salon des Artistes Francais (or World Fair) in Paris in 1925 would later in time become the 'place of birth' of the Art Deco style. The international full name of the World Fair in Paris in 1925 was 'Exposition internationale des arts décoratifs et industriels modernes'. And from the two words 'arts décoratifs' the abbreviation Art Deco was later in time used for the style that today probably is the most famous style in the design history of mankind. Looking at what it reads on the leather tag and looking at the aging of both the leather tag and at the other materials of which the tag is made, we are certain that this sculpture was actually and factually purchased at the Paris World Fair in 1925. With the name of both the artist and the name of the worldfamous fair in 1925 on the tag (with the 'In the Praetorium' reference above it), how else could this unique tag and this stunning signed bronze of Hauchecorne (from the exact same era) have ever been able to come together. It may be hard to see in our photos, but the signature too is extra special, because it looks to have been filled with white enamel to make it more artistic, more classy and more readable. The characteristic and detailed face of this positive thoughts thinking Chinese man of a certain age is ofcourse what this work of art really is about. In this day and age too much time is lost on (over)thinking negative ideas and emotions and, we feel that, maybe Gaston Hauchecorne wanted to make people aware (and leave behind sculptures showing) that life is short and how important it is to, besides eating healthy, also be aware of what it is that you are feeding your mind with.
