About the Item
This is a bronze anatomical sculpture of a head and face of a human being made by Alfonso Arana (1927-2005) . He was born in New York City from a Puerto Rican mother and a Mexican father. He studied art in Mexico at the Atelier de Jose Bardasano, at the Manhattan School of Arts in New York, the Academie Julian and L’Ecole Des Beaux-Arts of Paris, and did post graduate work at the American University in Washington, D.C. In the year 2003, he was granted the National Honor Medal by the French government for his life achievements and contributions to Art and Culture. His Art Works has been exhibited in different parts of the world. This art work depicts an open upper head with a hollow and neck sculpture of a human being. The face shows big hollow eyes, heavy lower lips and a Roman nose. The head depicts a collected wave hair that is covered in part by a broken helmet or hat like. The bronze sculpture is hold by a metal that is attached to a square marble block. The artist once explained that his alive and expressive human figures do not have any skulls because “ they are receptacles of the active things in the world as is God, nature, life, whatever we want.”
