About the Item

Stunning life-size bust of a gentleman with an Order of Knighthood from Belgium. Beautiful weathered patin, if you want the colors more deep you can wax the bronze. Marie Pierre François Vermeylen, more commonly known as Frantz Vermeylen studied at the college and at the Academy of Fine Arts in Leuven with painters Charles Van der Eycken and Jean-Jacques Bekkers, then with sculptors De Taeye and Vanderlinden. He continued his artistic education at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris where he worked in the studio of the sculptor Augustin-Alexandre Dumont. He then took over the father's workshop and continued to work in the style of his father until his death in 1888. He began to create medals in 1894. He joined the Royal Numismatic Society as a correspondent on July 7, 1895 and was elected a member at the general assembly of July 5, 1903. His work totaled 34 medals. Having worked on the decoration sites of the city hall of Leuven, the station of Amsterdam and the Rijksmuseum in the 1880s, he became the official expert of the Leuven authorities, before also responding to orders for decoration for the city of Oudenaarde, Saint-Gertrude abbey, the Volksbank, etc. Specializing in church interiors, statuaries, decorative sculptures and furniture (eg Saint-Martin in Sambreville), he remains an artist in demand as much for his medals as for his busts and statues. Complement Some public monuments - Statues of Charles V, William of Bavaria, Marguerite of York and Arnould of Binche, in front of the station, Binche - Monument Gouverneur Baron Édouard Orban de Xivry, 1903, Arlon - Edouard Rémy funeral monument, Vlierbeek.
