Bronze Bust of a Young Woman on a Marble Base by Jules Blanchard

About the Item

We present you this beautiful large bronze patinated sculpture from 1900, depicting a young woman and signed by Jules Blanchard (1833-1916). The foundry mark is present on the back, and it was cast by Thibault et Frères workshop in Paris, which also collaborated with a renowned French sculptor and painter, Alexandre Falguière (1831-1900). The young woman's face is shown to have a charming smile, reflecting the romantic gaze of the Belle Époque, and the medal patina adds depth to her expression. The sculpture is mounted on an exquisite square base made of red marble, featuring various ornamental details like a bec de corbin, recesses, curves, and semi-circles. This sculpture would make an great addition to a chest or a pedestal. Jules Blanchard (1832-1916) was a French sculptor born in Puiseaux, Loiret. Coming from a family of merchants, he became a student in the workshop of François Jouffroy in Paris. He married the daughter of the famous neo-classical sculptor Denis Foyatier. In 1881, he was honored as a Knight of the Legion of Honor, and at the 1889 Universal Exposition he won a gold medal and served as a jury member for sculpture. A prolific sculptor, Blanchard worked with both clay and plaster. His preferred themes revolved around allegory and mythology. He passed away on May 3, 1916, in Puiseaux, Loiret.
