About the Item

The bust has been sculpted from earthenware clay and fired with a Bronze glaze. It is sculpted in a mannered style, with a dramatic, expressively turned head and tender expression. This exquisite and mysterious portrait bust came into our possession a few years ago. We've been trying to identify it ever since but have not succeeded in finding the artist or the sitter. This dramatic style was popular in photography in the 1940s, particularly Hollywood portrait photography, and follows the conventions of 20th century theatrical portrait sculpture, with its hauteur and drama. Mathilda arrived wearing a chain mesh necklace of indeterminate age - possibly 1970s. It is part of this sale. Please see images. The base is signed, indistinctly. We have included an image of a lead pencil rubbing of the signature because the glossy surface of the glaze makes photography difficult. It's a quite remarkable sculpture. It's life sized and therefore one strongly feels her presence in the room. Even our cat responded by sitting near her with her back turned - something she would only do to a living person or other animal. The bust itself is beautiful. This portrait clearly captures an individual. She has an aura of strength and reserve mixed with expressive emotion. She has a youthful, resolute, tender presence. Though somewhat exaggerated in its modelling, this portrait represents a woman of character and integrity.

Totemic Head Sculpture Unsigned by Jencik, Melbourne, 1998
By Paul Jencik
Located in Melbourne, AU
Another wonderful marble sculpture with an intriguing provenance. Unsigned. Part of a series by Paul Jencik, circa 1998-2001. This ‘totemic head’ sculpture is carved from a single block of marble in a snowy white. It’s the remaining head from a much larger totemic sculpture, the base now lost. This figurative face can be interpreted in many ways. Jencik references human, animal and natural forms but never quite allows us to reach a conclusion about the origins of his creations. Jencik was a welder, boat builder and metal worker with a strong creative instinct but without the opportunity or artistic training that would afford his work any recognition. He created a large series of marble and timber sculptures...
