About

Joseph Louis "Joe Louis" Barrow (1914—1981) was a legendary World Heavyweight Champion who, from 1937-1949 won 26 consecutive championship fights. Known for being honest and hardworking, Louis was also represented for many a seminal figure in the fight for racial equality. During his 140 month-straight run of wins, the artist Mahonri Young (1877—1957), himself well known for his sculptures of title fighters, did this sculpture from life. Young was the elder grandchild of the LDS Church leader Brigham Young. Mahonri Young moved to New York to study at the Art Students League and, later, to Paris, where he studied at the Académie Julian.
