Bust of Clytie, Copeland Parian Ware after C. Delpech, England, 1868

About the Item

A refined and classically elegant 19th-century Parian ware bust of Clytie, sculpted by Charles Delpech and produced by Copeland for the Art Union of London in 1868. Rendered in fine Parian porcelain, this sculptural work exemplifies Victorian neoclassicism. Clytie, a mythological nymph from Greek antiquity, is shown with downcast eyes and softly modelled features, her hair arranged in flowing classical waves. The bust is raised on an integral calyx-moulded socle and circular plinth, which bears clear impressed marks: – C. DELPECH, REDᵀ – COPELAND – ART UNION OF LONDON 1868 This piece was made as part of the Art Union’s programme to promote high art through accessible editions of contemporary sculpture. It remains a collectible and iconic example of English Parian ware. Dimensions: Height: 34.5 cm (13.5 in) Width: 16 cm (6.3 in) Depth: 24 cm (9.4 in) Condition: Very good overall. A small chip to the socle rim is visible on close inspection but largely hidden in display. No cracks or restoration. Provenance: Private collection, England.
