Bust of Juliette Récamier, Alabaster, 19th century

About the Item

19thC Bust of Juliette Récamier Alabaster, 42 x 23 x 11 cm The sculpture depicts the bust of Jeanne Françoise Julie Adélaïde Bernard, better known as Juliette Récamier or Madame Récamier (Lyon, Dec. 3, 1777-Paris, May 11, 1849), a famous French saloner in the era of the Directory and the First Empire. La famiglia di Juliette apparteneva alla borghesia di Lione: suo padre, Jean Bernard, era un notabile reale. Appointed director of finance, he moved to Paris with his family in 1786. A friend of Madame de Staël and later, under the Empire, a friend and companion of Chateaubriand, she was a key figure in the opposition to Napoleon Bonaparte's regime, thanks to her cultural salon, which was a political and intellectual center. Because of her positions, she ended up being exiled from Paris. After staying from September 1811 to June 1812 in Châlons-en-Champagne and then Lyon, he visited Italy. He was only able to return to the French capital at the fall of the Empire in 1815, where he continued to receive the most important celebrities of the time. Juliette is portrayed as she shyly lowers her gaze and holds a veil over her chest with both hands, covering her breasts, in a gesture of great modesty and reserve. A faint smile hovers on her lips, and her wavy hair is held back by a band in a high hairstyle. The work is derived from the model made by French sculptor Joseph Chinard (Lyon, February 12, 1756-June 20, 1813). After receiving his initial training in Lyon, as a painter at the École Royale de Dessin and as a sculptor in a local workshop, Chinard made a trip to Rome between 1784-87, where he won a prize from the Accademia di San Luca with the terracotta sculpture Perseus and Andromeda. Instead, he made the Juliette Récamier marble, now preserved in Lyon at the Musée des Beaux Arts, during a stay in Paris between 1801 and 1802. There is also a terracotta version of the work, now housed at the Getty Museum in Los Angeles. Chinard's works can in fact be admired today in major museum collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, in addition to the two institutions mentioned above. • 19th Century Pair of Desks with portraits of Petrarch and Leonardo Alabaster
    Located in Milan, IT
19th century Pair of desks with portraits of Petrarch and Leonardo (2) Alabaster, 34 and 35 cm diam The pair of alabaster discs features a central cameo with the effigy of Petrarch and Leonardo, probably part of a larger series that featured illustrious characters from Italian history. On the openwork frame of Petrarch there are portraits of some characters who face each other, combined for centuries, as can be seen from the shapes of the garments that span several centuries: from the thirteenth century, in which men wear long-tipped bonnets, to the fifteenth century and Sixteenth century, the two characters at the top, in the seventeenth century, with wide collars, up to the eighteenth century. Francesco Petrarca (1304-1374) embodies the figure of the humanist intellectual par excellence, entirely dedicated to the study of Latin conceived as the only form of expression worthy of a man of letters, so as to serve any form of written communication, including letters and the reflection on himself witnessed in the Secretum. A personality made more complex by obsessive perfectionism, which led him to a continuous and infinite editing of the work which he also flaunted to consider as minor and which instead ensured him an undying fame among posterity, the Canzoniere. But the only aspect fixed in the collective imagination is that of the lover who idolizes the places where his ideal love blossomed...
