Carrara Marble Bust of Juliette Récamier after Joseph Chinard
About the Item
Late 19th century neoclassical bust of Madame Récamier crafted of white Carrara marble after the French sculptor Joseph Chinard. Married at the age of 16 to Jacques-Rose Récamier, a rich banker, Juliette Récamier (1777-1849) was a socialite, whose fashionable literary salon drew Parisians from the leading literary and political circles of the French Consulate to the end of the July Monarchy. Accomplished, shy and modest by nature, Juliette was also very beautiful. Some of the most accomplished portraitists of the era sculpted, drew, and painted her image.

Literature
The bust of Madame Récamier was sculpted by Joseph Chinard (Lyon, 1756-1813) between 1801 and 1802. Coyly looking down, Madame Recamier holds a veil across her chest. The sheath both demurely conceals and reveals her breasts. The sculptor cleverly compensated for the artificiality of the bust form by elongating the bust to mid-torso and covering the transition between the body and pedestal with drapery, creating a work of surprising naturalism. The softly modeled limbs and the slight twists of her head and shoulders suggest a living presence while the upswept hairstyle suggests Recamier's elegance.
Chinard's original terracotta bust is in Getty Museum in Los Angeles. Another version in marble is in Museum of Fine Arts in Lyon. Our Carrara marble bust is a late 19h-century edition of Chinard's sculpture.
