About the Item

These three small grand tour busts were produced between 1800 and 1820. Small in scale but masterfully rendered they all represent important images from antiquity that now reside in famous collections. The quality of the casting is superb in each with finely detailed hair, facial features and soft delicate anatomical detail to the skin of the faces and necks. One is of Caesar Augustus, considered the first Roman emperor. And the ancient original in marble now resides in Chatsworth, the probably the greatest of all English country houses. The second of Socrates, the philosopher, is after a Roman marble. Lastly is Dionysus with his hair in a band, after the original from the Villa of the Papyri in Herculaneum, considered one of the most beautiful bronze busts to survive from ancient times. The three busts retain their original patina in very good condition with only slight rub-through to the noses and some strands of hair. The nicely shaped socles of all three are not patinated and originally were intended to be bright and shiny contrasting with the finish and details of the busts but have turned a natural dark color over the almost two hundred years since there creation.
